Hey, Hi & Welcome

Posted on August 16, 2022October 25, 2022 by Lou

Welcome to Wonky Acres, it sure is nice to see you.

As I sat down to right my first post I very quickly realised is that having the idea to start a blog was easy but … sitting down to actually write an entry is a lot more challenging….I’m thinking the easiest way to do this is to not overthink it and just get on with typing what comes into my head so here goes.

Just in case you haven’t seen our ‘About’ section here’s a recap:

‘Wonky Acres is a small 10 acre farm on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Australia. We are at the beginning of realising a lifelong dream to live a more sustainable life. Our aim is to grow and nurture our little plot of land to produce our own food (and more) and to be more active participants in community in which we live.’

Where it says ‘WE are beginning to realise a lifelong dream’ what it really means is ME. However, I do have the great fortune of sharing this journey with an amazing man who supports me and all my crazy (and fabulous) ideas. What started out as small native garden along the side of the shouse slowly progressed into the conversion of a livestock paddock to allow me to have a go at establishing a veggie patch and food forest. Imagine my joy.

Having dreamed about a life of self-sufficiency for years, decades even, I have flipped through many a book and watched countless videos all providing the very sound advice that planning is key. Knowing all this I decided the best course of action was to jump right in, spend enough money to own shares in the local nursery and start planting. Now I know this wasn’t the wisest way to go about it and I’m sure I will live to regret some of my decisions, however I’ve realised that when it comes to gardening, learning by doing works best for me. I’m usually a research, plan, write lists, research some more kind of person to the point where I actually don’t get stuff done because I’m too busy making sure I know how to do it right. Not this time! I’m not sure what was driving me, I just felt I needed to get plants in the ground. Maybe it was seeing the world changing as it is or not being as young as I once was, but I didn’t want to waste any more time thinking, it was time to get digging. I should probably mention that I’m not very good at gardening. I love it and can spend all day pottering about in the garden, but my success rate can be a bit hit and miss. Some things work out great, others… not so much – but that’s part of my journey and each time things don’t go so well I learn a little bit more for next time.
