Another beautiful morning on the farm. It has been a few full on days and I considered having the morning off but no, the calves had a different idea. I was obviously late getting outside and George (our young bull) felt obliged to remind me they were waiting for breakfast. Thank you Georgie, it was the push I needed this morning.
Have you ever heard a cow gurgle? George and his mum Bella have this distinct call that starts with a moo and ends with a gurgle. It’s the weirdest sound, I wonder if other cattle do it.
Although we are still in winter I can feel it warming up and I’m keen to get the seedlings started. We recently bought one of those DIY box greenhouse. It’s not the sturdiest of things (understatement) and I’ve got my fingers and toes crossed it doesn’t blow away in the August/September winds. The thinking was to start with a smaller outlay whilst we work out if we want to invest in a more permanent structure. One week in and I can confidently say:
- It will be used
- Location is good but size is not… 2 x 2m is not big enough!!
- It needs to be more sturdy
I can see another project being added to the never ending list of things to do.
I managed to feed the cattle & the chooks, collect the eggs, muck out the chook house, go another round of slug wars and brew a couple of big pots of tea in preparation of Kombucha bottling after work. I ran out of time to start my bread so I squeezed that into my lunch break, it ended up another busy busy day.
